Here’s a roundup of the most colorful art, products, websites and such that I’ve come across in the last week.

Books

The Octonauts and the Frown Fish

octonauts.com; purchase at immedium.com

This is the third edition in the Octonauts series and yet again the colors are right on point. The cast of colorful characters are on another deep blue adventure, this time to help out the frown fish have a little fun. Each page is a treat for any color lover as the book is full of color cuteness of soft yet vibrant palettes, and the wonderful compositions and styling we've come to expect from the Meomi team's illustrations.

Art

Boulders by Gemma Smith

sarahcottiergallery.com

At her recent show at Sarah Cottier Gallery in New South Wales, Australia, artist Gemma Smith showed off her eye for contrast and colour.

On top of her painted works, my faves are her large, multi-faceted acrylic sculptures, which she calls “boulders.” I want to lick them; they look like the top of a gigantic ring pop. It might be tempting to think this type of modern graphic art is simple, and I know we’re into a big “My Kid Could Draw That” phase right now, but... continuing reading over at the source shape + colour.

Communicating with Color: 'Gong' video by Eric Lerner

ericlerner.com

This video by film-maker Eric Lerner and featuring the song 'gong' by Sigur Rós, explores the possibilities of communicating emotions through color and ask the question of what would happen if these colors were on display for all to see.

It took Spanish artist Miquel Barcelo over a year and 100 tons of paint and pigments from all over the world to create this stunning work, which is valued at roughly 18 million euros (23 million US dollars). The installation is located on the ceiling of the Human Rights and Alliance of Civilizations Room, and has caused an immediate stir over how it was funded. Most of the money appears to have come from the Spanish government and private donors, but it appears that some of that money was supposed to go to international aid. Said one guy, “It’s a small price to pay for a dope-ass ceiling.” I tend to agree. - joyengine
